Mr. Pancake House

This cheap and cheerful pancake shop has a bright orange signboard, quaint Swiss-style decor, and some of the tastiest pancakes, omelets and waffles in Jing'an (hell, in the whole of Shanghai). It's located on Wuding Lu one block down from perennial favorite hangover-savior Munchies, and is small enough for queues to form at weekends.

The combo sets are the best deal. We tried the Mr. Pancake House breakfast, which was great for 42 RMB. We got two decent sized buttermilk pancakes with syrup on the side, two chicken sausages (other choices are beef and pork), scrambled eggs, home fries, and a coffee (interchangeable with tea). The large menu covers omelets (we're intrigued by the "fajita" variety... Might have to go back and try that), pancakes in a variety of flavors, sandwiches, and Western-style mains.

There's WiFi and magazines if you want to stay for the afternoon. Look out for the bizarre paintings in the room on the left - it's some sort of "Donald Duck in Shanghai" series. We're not sure what it's all about, but it's surreal enough to be cool.
