The Wagas empire continues to grow, with fresh branches popping up all over town, from Tianshan Lu in Hongqiao to Yueda 889 mall in north Jing'an. The Yueda branch has a terrace looking out onto the open-air mall foyer and Wanhangdu Lu beyond. Inside it's got that Wagas hallmark cozy minimalism, with a bank of soft banquettes along one wall, armchairs and tables dotted around, and folk on their laptops using the free WiFi.
The menu is the same as every other Wagas, which means coffee, healthy salads, sandwiches, smoothies and Asian sets. Wagas is most popular as a breakfast, lunch and coffee place, but the pastas are reduced to 38 kuai after 6pm, and there's wine and beer if you fancy sticking around for dinner.
When we visited, we tried the special of the day, which was a tasty Japanese chicken katsu steak inside a rosemary ciabbatta with chili sauce and salad. The iced mocha was up to par, and the staff were friendly and efficient.
