We'd walked past this restaurant countless times on our way to Baker & Spice, La Strada and Mr. Willis, but finally decided to stop by for dinner. It's a tiny, cozy space that's decked out rather like a Parisian parlour (oil paintings on the wall, flock wallpaper, white tablecloths), and is run by Annie Yang, formerly of Vargas Grill, Casa 13 and Osteria. This incarnation of Settebello is the second; the original was a larger restaurant on Huashan Lu that closed about six years ago.
Settebello's menu is small but colorful, with starters, pasta and pizza that are more adventurous than the usual Italian fare. Among the appetizers is a pork feet roll carpaccio with olive salsa and tomato confit, and a tasty seafood broth. Top picks from the main courses are the mushroom risotto with bacon, asparagus and fava beans, and the pillowy-soft pumpkin gnocchi. The pizzas aren't as good as others you'll find on Anfu Lu, so we recommend giving them a miss in favor of the pasta, which is top-notch.
Dinner for two with wine should set you back between 300 and 400 RMB. Look out for special deals at lunchtime.
