SHANGHAI RESTAURANT

Organic Kitchen

The buzz: Fresh, healthy, organic food delivered to your door. According to their website, they provide an alternative to “pesticide-filled vegetables, beef with growth hormones or chickens raised on anti-biotics”, which has to be a good thing.

The décor: It’s delivery only, so their premises remain a mystery.

The food: A big menu full of organic delights – pasta, appetizers, soup, sandwiches, wraps, and bento boxes. We tried the spinach, sage, and potato soup (26 RMB for a cup, or 36 RMB for a bowl) which was a smooth blend of herbs and vegetables, through which the sage flavor definitely shone through. The eggplant moutabal (48 RMB) came with pita bread and fresh carrot, cucumber and cherry tomatoes, and was well-textured and smoky-flavored. For mains we tried the Thai beef salad (68 RMB) – a generous punnet of fresh greens topped with sliced beef and satay and sesame dressing – and the falafel and tahini wrap (45 RMB). The falafel was surprisingly authentic, and went perfectly with the pickled cucumber and salad. We also got a chicken tikka Panini (56 RMB) which was just as good.

The drinks: A range of fresh juices, 26 RMB for small size, 34 RMB for large.

Why you’ll be back: If you’re sick of MSG and yearn for something organic, this is a good choice. The food is tasty, healthy, and filling, and free of nasties. It’s not the cheapest, especially since they don’t have restaurant overheads to consider, but it’s worth it for the organic factor.
