SHANGHAI BAR

Prive

The buzz: Yet another exclusive Hong Kong club has made its way into Shanghai, taking up the whole top floor at Bund 6 and turning it into a massive clubbing space.

The look: Rising up from the demise of its prodecessor Club Tiandi, Prive has given the space a complete makeover. Not only its 1,000-square-meter size will wow you; the combination of Neo-Gothic architecture, minimalist design and luxe furnishings is perfect for a decadent night out.

A heavy curtain divides the club into two parts: the more intimate lounge area for chillout, and the club area where people dance and mingle. The lounge area resembles an attic with its wooden floor and dramatic inclining wooden ceiling, and you can get a view of the Huangpu River here through the windows. The design of the club area is more straightforward. The long oval bar takes the spotlight, and thankfully enough space is saved for the dancefloor. There is also an outdoor terrace where you can take in the spectacular river view.

The music: With such a decent venue, you might expect something more tasteful than 'Somebody Call 911'. But no. We hear the same old commercial stuff here. Somebody call a better DJ, please?

The drinks: Adventurous cocktail drinks should try out Prive's signature drinks like Passion Prime and Devil's Choice (80rmb), while a wide range of mixed drinks and shots are also available.

The crowd: Prive Hong Kong is a members' club, but its Shanghai outlet is open for everyone at the moment. The grand opening party was so packed that the queue at the entrance of Bund 6 went down as far as the corner of Guangdong Lu, but on a more recent visit at weekend, we found the lounge area was closed and everybody was partying in the club area. The crowd was stylish and rather young, offering plenty of chances for late night hookups.

Why you'll be back: For a fun clubbing alternative on the bund, and for the terrace when the weather gets warmer.
