Imagine living in a world with only BBC, TV Cinq, Thai channels and Star Movies. A world pretty much cut off from the real world. Well, here’s the shocker: that’s the world many people live in. Some people don’t even have Star Movies, which is a shame, because The Hills Have Eyes 2 is a classic.Good thing there’s this new trend in Thailand where we remake all those great shows that don’t get aired here. It started with Samak trying to give us a taste of Martha Stewart. Then the PAD put on an hour-long impression of Steven Colbert. Lately, Southern insurgents did a hysterical Team America-esque terrorist video that was definitely Saturday Night Live-grade material. Why, they even promised a cease-fire! A few hours later, a ranger got shot in the wrist. It’s that kind of Jim Carrey uneasiness we love. The more you wait for a punch line, the greater the comic effect. Now, the government is upset. They want their hour-long show, too. The problem is, they need a concept. Reality TV is tired and cooking’s overdone so we’re thinking, why not a cartoon? Samak starts out, he’s just fat and useless. All he does is make noodles and blunders. But then, he’s selected by a square-faced master to be the Dragon Warrior. Right now, we’re still in Season 1, and no one can see the Dragon Warrior in him. But you just wait. Season 2 opens with him sending troops to the Ancient Temple (which got overrun in Season 1 because of a nasty traitor who does NOT make it to Season 2). The ensuing showdown should be of Red Cliff proportions.Or maybe the PPP should rip off Wall-E. In the far future, Thailand is just a huge wasteland that has crumbled under a heap of debris: rubber bands, Zara-sale shopping bags, lost mobile phones and copies of free publications (except this one). All that’s left is a cute square-faced robot that goes around asking, “How did this happen? And where was everyone when it was happening? And what’s up with all these abandoned fire trucks and cookie boxes?” Everyone was watching it on TV, little robot, they never saw it coming.
